Let’s Eat Everything
“Let’s Eat Everything” is an educational initiative for working with students and dining-room educators (as well as teaching staff) on aspects such as food waste, where food comes from, local production, consumer awareness, the ecological footprint and the environmental cost of the food served up in school dining rooms.
During the school year, we will work on one focus food per month and use it as a reference to measure the percentage of food wasted.
-
- To raise awareness of food waste in school dinners.
- To find out the ecological footprint of certain foods used in school meals on a daily basis.
- To provide a contextual framework for learning about student participation, responsibility, critical thinking and empowerment.
- To encourage non-teaching staff to get involved in schools’ sustainability projects.
-
Schools that provide school dinners and support staff.
-
For a few weeks from a certain point during the school year, all participating schools’ canteens will simultaneously carry out a series of actions to find out where the food eaten at these canteens comes from, quantify each week’s food waste (if any), analyse its ecological footprint and carry out a waste prevention campaign in response to the findings. Finally, a general assessment will be carried out towards the end of the school year using all the data collected and compared and the steps taken. Taking part in this micro-network involves a series of stages that start with a question for each day of the week and a fun activity to do over lunch in the canteen to answer it.
-
- Training for school canteen educators
- An educational guide with suggested activities, strategies and resources for the project
- A conceptual framework of food waste in Barcelona and Catalonia
- Processing of the data compared to determine the school’s food waste-related ecological footprint
- Additional teaching resources on food waste
- Supporting communication materials (a canvas for writing down the answers to the daily questions on the focus foods).
-
- Participating teachers must attend training sessions.
- Participating schools must have a representative who can be contacted during the project.
