Compost and mulch
Schools in the More Sustainable Schools network can request compost and mulch during the first term of each school year. This 2024-2025 school year, applications can be submitted between October 15 and 25, and the compost can be collected from November.
Compost is the result of the natural decomposition of organic matter. The compost available in this case was obtained from organic vegetable waste produced by municipal parks and gardens, which should mainly be used to structure and oxygenate the soil in gardens and allotments. To fertilise your school allotments effectively, we suggest you make your own compost with a better balance between organic plant-based waste to provide structure and plant-based scraps from the kitchen or allotment, which are more nutrient-rich.
Mulch is a protective layer of organic matter that can be added to gardens for protection. In this case, it is made up of wood chips from trees pruned in Barcelona.
