Sustainability planning and report

The More Sustainable Barcelona Technical Secretariat makes a model document available for organisations that want to plan the sustainability actions they will undertake during the year or that want to compile all the actions they promote every year.

The goal of this document is to help the organisations to plan and track the actions they want to undertake. Moreover, once the actions are completed, this same planning document will enable them to report on their results and can become the sustainability annual report.

Organisations working on a double scale with members (retail associations, guilds, professional associations) must use the report to communicate the actions promoted by the organisation that were undertaken by their members. For other organisations in the Network, it is an optional yet utilitarian document.

The reports can be shared on the decidim.barcelona platform. To do so, a sustainability action must be published and the report included as an attached document, or a link to the website where it was published has to be provided.

FAQ

  • Organisations that want to take action but need accompaniment can do the following:

    • Ask for personalised advice from the relevant technician.
    • Consult the sustainability actions of other organisations on the decidim.barcelona portal.
    • Use the PAS tool: This tool helps organisations to perform a sustainability self-diagnosis to identify the actions that they could take to improve their environmental and social impact.

  • If you use the model provided by the More Sustainable Barcelona Technical Secretariat, all you have to do to go from planning to the report is finish filling out the sections that assess the actions.

    By filling out these sections, you’ll briefly assess the action both quantitatively and qualitatively.
     

  • The planning of an organisation’s sustainability strategy can last as long as is appropriate. However, the report to be published on the decidim.barcelona platform has to be annual. That is, every year you have to report on the actions undertaken during the year (from 1 January to 31 December).

  • Publishing a report on the decidim.barcelona platform is not necessary for members of the Network without other member organisations or economic activities. The goal of this tool is to facilitate the compilation and planning of the actions undertaken during the year.

    However, organisations with other member organisations or economic activities (associations, guilds, professional associations, etc.) that want their members to enjoy the benefits of the “Ready for Action” space have to prepare and publish an annual report summarising the actions undertaken by their members.

  • The report can be submitted in your own format, or you can use the model prepared and provided by the More Sustainable Barcelona Technical Secretariat (link to report template).

    Organisations with members (double scale) have to include in the report the number of members that have done each of the actions proposed in the report.

  • A sustainability action is any initiative already carried out that improves sustainability and goes beyond fulfilment of the environmental regulations in force. They are relevant and exemplary actions that bring added value to the Network due to their transformative or innovative nature or their capacity to be scaled up or replicated.

    Sustainability actions are classified according to the ten main areas of action in the More Sustainable Barcelona Citizen Commitment:

    1. The climate emergency
    2. Loss of biodiversity
    3. The health of the planet and people
    4. The food model
    5. The production and consumption model
    6. Access to housing
    7. Safe, sustainable and healthy mobility
    8. The energy model
    9. Water management
    10. The cultural and educational model

     

    Particular emphasis is now being placed on sustainability actions that contribute to the two collective challenges that have been prioritised: decarbonisation and water conservation. Also included are the actions of Barcelona’s Zero Plastic Commitment.
     

  • The reports contain information on the actions implemented during the year and can be published on the decidim.barcelona platform between January and March of the following year.

  • Read through the following manual to find out how to register on the decidim.barcelona platform.

  • You should choose one of the actions described in the report and publish it as a sustainability action on the decidim.barcelona platform. To do so, you have to be registered on the decidim.barcelona platform and go to the “Sustainability actions” section.

    Once the action is published, you can attach the report as an additional document.

    The More Sustainable Barcelona Technical Secretariat will review and validate the publication. If everything is in order, you will receive a notification informing you that it has been validated and published. If the action has not been validated, the Technical Secretariat will contact the organisation to explain the reason and offer support to modify it.
     

  • Publishing a report allows you to:

    • Have a work planning strategy in terms of sustainability and communication.
    • Review attainment of the objectives and results.
    • Create a joint working framework for all organisations with members.
    • Enhance the visibility of the decidim.barcelona platform.
    • Have the right to hold a Zone Green Point user card.
    • Have the right to request reductions in the public charge for waste collection
    • Enjoy the other advantages of the “Ready for Action” space.
       

  • The decidim.barcelona platform is the space where organisations will publish all the sustainability actions they are carrying out every year. This will create a snapshot of everything that all the Network’s members are doing to contribute to improving sustainability.

    The reports published will be included as documents attached to each organisation’s sustainability actions.

  • Unlike the former commitment, Action Plans are no longer used in the More Sustainable Barcelona Citizen Commitment 2024-2034 and have been replaced by sustainability actions. This entails another step towards sustainability by moving from planning to action!
