Educational centers generate certain amounts of hazardous waste that require specific collection and treatment. Hazardous waste is any substance or object that, due to its characteristics, is harmful to the environment or human health.
To properly manage these wastes, centers can use the PVME, which facilitates management up to a maximum weight of 5 kg, or manage them through an authorized waste manager.
A protocol must be followed when disposing of these wastes in the PVME to avoid any impact on the environment and human health.
PROTOCOL
The actions aimed at giving the proper destination to these wastes in the most correct way possible are six:
- Identification
- Packaging
- Labeling
- Storage
- Collection and transport
- Treatment
1. Identification
Once products become hazardous waste, they must be properly identified with a label. Therefore, the label is the first information we can have about the type of substance being handled. The essential information that the label must have is as follows:
• Product name.
• Name, address, and telephone number of the person responsible for marketing the hazardous product.
• Pictograms and hazard indications.
• Mention of the specific risks of hazardous products (R phrases).
• Prudence advice regarding hazardous products (S phrases).
The first four must be performed at the school center, and the remaining two correspond to the authorized waste manager.

2 i 3. Packaging and labeling
Proper segregation of hazardous waste is one of the key points for effective management. Therefore, it is necessary to package and label them appropriately.
Considerations:
• Do not mix different wastes in the same container.
• Use containers made of materials that are not susceptible to be affected by the contained waste.
• Plastic containers are recommended (glass containers can break).
• Containers must be solid and resistant.
• The closure of containers must be tight. .
• Containers should not be filled more than 90% of their capacity.
• Avoid transferring waste from one container to another.
In the labeling phase, it is important that the label includes the following:
• Center information (name, address, and phone number)
• Waste identification
• Packaging date
• Pictograms or hazard indicators
4. Storage
To store these types of products and prevent the greatest risk of causing harm to people and the environment, it is important to consider some indications when choosing the location.
It must be a dry and ventilated place, covered, with tiled or cemented floor, and accessible to students.
According to current regulations, the storage time, prior to collection and transport, cannot exceed six months. Also, consider storage incompatibilities. These incompatibilities are shown in the following table:

+ they can be stored together.
- they cannot be stored together.
× they can be stored together on certain occasions.
5. Collection and transport
This is the responsibility of the Mobile School Green Point. It carries out door-to-door collection with prior arrangement of the service.
Hazardous waste must be delivered under the conditions described in the previous sections, and a list must be sent, prior to the day of the visit, containing the laboratory waste to be delivered on the day of the service, to residusescoles@bcn.cat. Otherwise, they will not be accepted. The maximum quantity for disposal of these wastes is 5 kg.
6. Treatment
The treatment of hazardous waste aims to eliminate or reduce the hazardous nature of the substances or toxic constituents they contain. In cases where it is possible to recover them, they will be recycled or reused.
