Area 3 - Science and culture for and with citizens

Make science a shared value for all citizens through citizen science, living labs and research-action, promoting a quality scientific education for all and access to scientific knowledge.

Actions

  • 9.1. Promote STEAM programmes and other science programmes in the city’s schools, and carry out monitoring of these between the different areas of the City Council to share the best educational practices in research and science, including, in a cross-departmental manner, urban climate and environmental justice and gender equality.
  • 9.2. Create new scientific programmes for formal education, particularly for post compulsory education, such as the “Científics i científiques en residència” [Science residencies] programme for FP [vocational training] or the digital democracy programme.
  • 9.3. Design educational tools and resources in science with the city’s research centres and in organisations such as the Museum of Natural Sciences, Barcelona Zoo and the Barcelona Municipal Institute of Parks and Gardens.
  • 9.4. Define the roadmap on life-long scientific learning with universities, the City Council and the city’s educational and cultural centres.
  • 9.5. Consolidate the links between the city’s education network and the education system and the scientific and research world, with a view to ensuring universal access to scientific educational programmes and the promotion of scientific locations, especially among girls and young women.

Actions

  • 10.1. Host the Science Biennial in 2021 and 2023.
  • 10.2. Redefine and make a new Science Fair model, decentralised with regard to the region and in cooperation with the districts and city's scientific, social and cultural facilities.
  • 10.3. Promote scientific dissemination at the city’s facilities: museums, libraries, civic centres, innovation factories and laboratories, the Zoo, scientific academies, etc.
  • 10.4. Provide support for events of a scientific nature in collaboration with other City Council areas in three priority areas : the sustainable food capital, the climate emergency and ethical debates on the sciences.
  • 10.5. Consolidate the line of subsidies for the dissemination and promotion of scientific culture.

Actions

  • 11.1. Expand the Citizens’ Science Office, particularly in the field of social sciences, and with specific projects linked to solutions to the challenges faced by the city.
  • 11.2. Increase the participation of the city’s public facilities and social entities and groups in citizen science projects.
  • 11.3. Connect the Citizens’ Science Office with European projects in which the City Council participates to incentivise experiences of citizen science within the framework of these collaborations.
  • 11.4. Boost the Living Labs themselves and in collaboration with research entities, centres and institutes.
  • 11.5. Promote research-action projects and processes among citizens, scientific players and the administration to improve the city’s policies.

Actions

  • 12.1. Create and boost Barcelona Science spaces with the aim of expanding knowledge and increasing citizen access to research centres and other spaces in the city associated with scientific knowledge and citizen science.
  • 12.2. Promote and consolidate the programmes that promote citizen interaction with scientific research and knowledge, exploring different formats (spaces for conferences and meetings, scientific cafés, dissemination and communication events, art and science projects and exhibitions, etc.).
  • 12.3. Participate in community programmes with the participation of the City Council, universities and research centres at the city's spaces and facilities.
  • 12.4. Create spaces for the promotion of science and innovation as one of the engines for the recovery of the city post-Covid.
