Department of Science and Innovation
Barcelona Science and Innovation is the initiative of the Barcelona City Council that develops policies to support research, knowledge, and academic and scientific development.
The objective of the Department of Science and Innovation is to promote the transfer of knowledge generated in the scientific and research field to economy and society in general.
The Department was created on October 1, 2020, and currently forms part of the Area of Economy, Tax, Economic Promotion, and Tourism. The Department works continuously on science and university policies, gender policies in the scientific environment, maintains direct contact with the scientific and academic community of the city, and promotes the transfer of knowledge resulting from research in the economic, social, and political spheres of Barcelona.
Likewise, it continues the initiatives of the Barcelona Science Program, initiated in 2007 at the Barcelona Institute of Culture, with the promotion of actions such as the Hypatia European Science Prize, the City and Science Biennial, the Science Festival, Escolab, or the Barcelona Citizen Science Office, among others.
The Department of Science and Innovation coordinates and works with other departments and areas of the City Council with a relevant role in promoting scientific policies, and participates in cross-cutting tables where matters related to science, research centers, and universities present in the city and its metropolitan area are addressed.
