Universities in Barcelona
Barcelona is one of Europe's favourite cities for university study and research. Barcelona's privileged location, intense cultural life and open spirit are complemented by the wide range of public and private universities and the high level of research that takes place there.
Higher education extends beyond the universities with the schools of artistic studies and the wide range of higher education courses on offer. For all these reasons, in May 2022, the city hosted the UNESCO International Conference on Higher Education, held every ten years and which for the first time took place outside its headquarters in Paris.
In our territory, responsibility for university matters lies with the Generalitat de Catalunya through the Department of Research and Universities, a portal from which the wide range of studies offered by these institutions can be consulted. Even so, the City Council works together with the universities to promote the best conditions for research.
In Barcelona, the consultative and participatory body related to higher education and the university community is the Municipal Universities Advisory Council (CAMU), from which the City Council, through Barcelona Science and Innovation, guides its university policy and works jointly and proactively to resolve common challenges and promote cross-cutting projects.
Although they are not binding, the CAMU's proposals have enabled the City Council to orient its political strategy in this area and strengthen transversal collaboration with the universities, favouring better integration of the university community into the fabric of the city, as well as the social and economic impact of academic and research activity in the city.
