Observatori Metropolità de Papallones (mBMS)
The Observatori Metropolità de Papallones (mBMS) is part of the Plan to Improve the biodiversity of Barcelona's metropolitan parks and beaches, spaces that often occupy an intermediate position between the urban fabric and large natural areas.
Although they are largely unknown in scientific circles, these metropolitan spaces are home to a great deal of biodiversity and have great socio-environmental value. They can also play an important role in the ecological connectivity of the territory, as they facilitate the entry of native wildlife into cities. For this reason, the mBMS project aims to monitor the butterflies of these metropolitan areas and, at the same time, to be a laboratory for testing strategies to improve the abundance and diversity of this group of insects.
The first and second phases of the observatory began, at a pilot level, in six parks and two metropolitan beaches (2019-2020). For the third phase (2021), the observatory was expanded to ten parks and two additional beaches. In the fourth phase (2022), five more parks are added. And in the fifth phase (2023), four additional parks and one additional beach were added, bringing the total number of parks and five beaches in the metropolitan parks and beaches network to 26.
The Observatori Metropolità de Papallones consolidates a community of citizens with an interest in butterflies and metropolitan nature in general (about 50 volunteers).
