Network of Meteorological Observers
The Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (SMC) created in 2008 the Network of Meteorological Observers (XOM), formed by a group of people distributed throughout the Catalan territory.
The network was created to obtain meteorological data for Catalonia, based on manual observation by measuring the different variables. This network is made up of a group of people distributed throughout Catalonia who collaborate with the SMC by providing meteorological information in two different ways: in the form of meteorological observation, through the daily characterisation of the weather, and in the form of meteorological surveillance, providing visual information of outstanding phenomena in real time, especially to detect dangerous situations.
In order to carry out these tasks, a web application and a mobile application were created to provide information on the different observations made by the collaborators. The XOM currently has a total of 221 collaborators, 89 observers, 83 watchmen and 47 collaborators of the two modalities.
Citizen involvement: data collection and warnings of dangerous meteorological situations.
Status: active.
Scope: meteorology.
Activities within the framework of the Office: Programme in schools.
Where to view the data collected: XOM Observation and XOM Monitoring.
