Composting and Learning
In order to make home composting part of the daily routine of the city’s schools, Barcelona City Council provides a range of materials and services to teach students about composting.
“Composting and Learning” is an initiative for Barcelona’s More Sustainable Schools to help students see daily composting as a way to prevent waste, a theoretical and practical project based on the school curriculum, a way to increase their understanding of the cycles of matter in natural systems and an opportunity to continue working on activities relating to school allotments and vegetable gardens.
What are the goals?
- To help participants learn about, and understand, the decomposition process of organic matter.
- To reflect on the quality and quantity of organic waste generated.
- To promote participation to prevent and reduce the generation of waste and manage it responsibly.
- To foster best practices with composters.
- To increase the composting resources allocated to schools.
- To encourage schools to exchange experiences.
- To link work with composters to other subject areas, such as allotments, gardens, food and biodiversity.
- To link the waste prevention initiatives carried out in schools and in the city.

Sessions de la formació
Primera sessió. Fonaments sobre el compostatge
Aquesta sessió introductòria apropa els fonaments del compostatge a l’escola. Es defineix el punt de partida del centre educatiu, com organitzar-se, com vincular-ho amb el currículum i, en definitiva, com sistematitzar el treball al voltant del compostador de jardí o la granja de cucs.

Segona sessió. Aprofundim sobre compostatge
Aquesta sessió tracta els aspectes més tècnics sobre el compostatge. Per poder aprofundir en el funcionament del procés, primer cal aprendre a organitzar com es fan les primeres aportacions, el temps que dura un cicle sencer, quines fases o processos s’hi poden fer i quina fauna potencial s’hi pot trobar.

Tercera sessió. Intercanvi d’experiències
Sessió d’intercanvi que s’acostuma a fer en un centre educatiu de la xarxa i que ens serveix d’excusa per repassar els punts forts i febles del treball al voltant del compostador. Es genera un espai d’intercanvi d’experiències sobre les activitats que s’hi duen a terme i es resolen dubtes sobre els reptes més importants que es puguin tenir.

Quarta sessió. Experimentació amb el compostatge
L’experimentació és fonamental en l’aprenentatge d’infants, joves i adults, i el compostatge ofereix un ventall d’opcions molt generós. Durant la sessió s’ofereixen recursos de referència i es fa un tastet d’experiments i observacions demostratives.
