Citizen Science Day
The Citizen Science Day, which will be held on 10 October 2024 at the García Márquez Library, offers a space for sharing and debating the practice of citizen science and its constant evolution. This year, the event will be dedicated to reflecting on the challenge of active citizen participation in research projects.
We will explore the most common engagement strategies, the range of existing participation structures, and different participatory research methodologies, such as citizen science, citizen observatories, and Living Labs, among others, to find solutions to shared challenges.
It will be a day with two complementary sections. The first section, in the morning, is aimed at professionals and scientific, social, educational, and cultural stakeholders interested in approaches to research involving citizen participation. The second, in the afternoon, is open to everyone and is designed to bring citizen science closer to people of all ages. There will be an activity for children and another aimed at adults who want to learn about some of the projects directly from the researchers who carry them out.
Additionally, taking advantage of the library’s connection with Latin America, the morning session will feature experts developing research projects in collaboration with Latin American communities.
Morning of networking and exploration among expert stakeholders
From 9 am to 2.30 pm, we will have the opportunity to learn about strategies for engaging with the public through real research projects and be inspired to include new participatory practices in our initiatives.
Using a digital compilation of experiences and collective work in creativity dynamics, we will identify the key factors to consider and the potential strategies to apply to our citizen science projects.
We will close the morning with the round table, “Shared visions and challenges in citizen science from a European and Latin American perspective”, which will incorporate the experience of professionals working in citizen science here and in Latin America.

Afternoon of engagement with the public
During the first hour of the afternoon, starting at 5.30 pm, two short workshops will be held for children (ages 8 to 12), one led by the citizen science project MINKA (Institute of Marine Sciences [ICM-CSIC] and Quanta Labs) and the other by Heat watchers (Metròpoli Institute, Energy Research Institute of Catalonia (IREC) and AMB).
At 6.30 pm, there will be a showcase where adult audiences can learn about six different citizen science projects in the city: what they are researching, how they work, what results they expect, and how citizens can participate. At the end, there will be an opportunity for participants to share and compare some of the morning’s reflections, as well as to express their interests and motivations.
