Lichens of Barcelona
Lichens are unique and highly resistant organisms: they can live on rock and thrive under extreme climatic and meteorological conditions.
They are very sensitive to increased concentrations of pollutants, which makes them excellent bio-indicators, natural sentinels of air quality. The lichen map of a city reflects its quality and makes it possible to follow its evolution. Citizens participate in the mapping of Barcelona's lichens by working with experts to identify the species, recognise them and interpret them. The data collected are integrated into the iNaturalist platform, where, once validated, they are uploaded to the GBIF global biodiversity platform.
Citizen involvement: species identification, data collection and sharing to iNaturalist.
Status: periodically active.
Scope: environmental.
Activities within the framework of the Office: Neighbourhood Programme, Science Festival, Kaleidoscope 2019, Community of Practice.
Where to view the data collected: iNaturalist.
