Compost and mulch
Schools in the More Sustainable Schools network can request compost and mulch during the first term of each school year. This 2023-24 school year, requests were submitted between 16 and 27 October, and the compost was collected in November.
Compost is the result of the natural decomposition of organic matter. The compost available in this case was obtained from organic vegetable waste produced by municipal parks and gardens, which should mainly be used to structure and oxygenate the soil in gardens and allotments. To fertilise your school allotments effectively, we suggest you make your own compost with a better balance between organic plant-based waste to provide structure and plant-based scraps from the kitchen or allotment, which are more nutrient-rich.
Mulch is a protective layer of organic matter that can be added to gardens for protection. In this case, it is made up of wood chips from trees pruned in Barcelona.
Each school can order up to 300 litres in total (between compost and mulch). We suggest that you use the following table to calculate how much you need:
