THE FANTASTIC 42 PANEL: IS THERE A MADE-IN-EUROPE KIND OF FANTASTIC?
International roundtable
What do a Dane, an Italian, a Hungarian, a Valencian, a Pole, an Englishman and an American woman who’s been living and writing in Great Britain for years have in common (besides being guests at this year’s 42 Festival)? Fantastic genres, of course, although recent works by these particular authors span everything from science fiction to horror and even thrillers and essays. All of them European, albeit by adoption in one case, do these seven internationally acclaimed authors feel that they’re part of a specific community, or are they more tuned into leading figures from elsewhere? Are they aware of what’s being written in similar genres in other European countries, or are they more concerned with who’s using codes or resources similar to their own? In short, is there a common thread somehow uniting Solvej Balle, Aleksandra Lun, Attila Veres, Stuart Turton, Emilio Bueso, Lisa Tuttle and the French Arthurian knight discovered by Emanuele Arioli? Under the keen guidance of Alexander Páez, the 42 Festival’s regular moderator of international roundtable discussions, this group of exceptional authors will build on their recent works to determine what unites them most: geography, genre, influences, language... or diversity.
