Barcelona renews its commitment to the Volta a Catalunya for a further four years
The city of Barcelona will continue to be a emblem of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya and will be hosting the final of the men's race for another four years. This year it will also be hosting the final of the first ever women's stage race.
After more than one hundred editions as the main protagonist of the historic Catalan cycling race, the City Council has renewed for a further four years its commitment to the men’s race, which features Montjuïc as one of the cycling world’s most iconic backdrops for the final stage, and will host the final of the historic first edition of the women’s stage race.
Barcelona and the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya have gone hand in hand since the very first edition of the race, which set off from the Catalan capital on Three King’s Day in 1911, and finished there three days later. Since then, the capital of Catalonia has been present in each and every one of the 102 editions of the cycling race, the longest-running elite international cycling race after the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia, and this year is will continue to make history by hosting the arrival of the final stage of the first ever women’s stage race.
Barcelona City Council and the race organisers have renewed their agreement for a further four years, and it will now run until at least 2027. This agreement means that the city of Barcelona will continue to host the final of the men’s race, a well-established date on the UCI WorldTour’s elite international cycling calendar, which this year will be taking place between 18 and 24 March. And this year, the Catalan capital will also be hosting the final of the first edition of the women’s stage race, an historic edition which will be taking place between 7 and 9 June.
The history of the Volta a Catalunya will continue to be written with the women’s race, which in 2024 is being held for the first time ever as a stage race, gaining a space on the international calendar with category UCI 2.1.
This year will be the 70th occasion that Barcelona has been the start and finish point of the Volta, making it by far the race’s most visited host city.
