UNTHINKABLE SETTINGS: NEW THEATRE IN FANTASTIC GENRES
As Sergi Belbel, Marc Rosich and Helena Tornero proved in the second edition of the 42 Festival, fantastic genres, when taken to the stage, are the opposite of superhero films. Unable to turn to special effects and post-production, actors, directors and playwrights know that non-realism, in theatre, means having to concentrate all the talent in the core elements: characters, plot, writing, the nuances of art and acting. When it comes to theatre, people think that science fiction is less technological, fantasy is less awe-inspiring and horror is less immersive. But is it really? What if it’s the other way around, and the best thrills of the genre can be found onstage? Did directors Loredana Volpe and Inés Galiano think about this when creating the plays that will be performed at the 42 Festival? What’s the participating actors’ approach? What does moderator Cristina Xifra, an expert in theatre and fantastic genres, see as the challenge for the guests in relation to these issues? This roundtable discussion, taking place between the two plays in the 2024 edition of the 42 Festival, will reveal all the secrets of what goes on both backstage and onstage.
