LET’S TALK SHIRLEY JACKSON: “A RATHER HAUNTED LIFE”
Continuing the talk by expert Bernice M. Murphy, this roundtable discussion will offer the final fireworks of ShirleyCon II. Building on Murphy’s ideas, Ruth Franklin’s biography and some of Jackson’s articles and published letters, we’ll explore how the author’s life was indirectly part of her work, with examples such as her university experience and the theme of infidelities (in Hangsaman), her penchant for the esoteric, her relationship with her mother, children and neighbours plus others. In addition to Murphy herself and event organiser and moderator Gemma Solsona, the conversation will include translator and author Javier Calvo, who invented the name ShirleyCon in one of his stories, and Jackson scholar Astrid Lozano, who’s analysed her relationship with folk horror, myths and fairy tales.
