Screening of the film Gagarine as part of the “Pantalla” series, which focuses on the theme “Imagining Futures” in this edition. This film lies at the intersection of social cinema and magical realism. On one hand, it portrays the reality of many impoverished immigrants who have become trapped in social and economic rejection. While on the other, Youri embodies the dream of the poor, which is not the American dream of prosperity, but rather the dream of reaching the moon: finding an unconditional love that embraces you. Therefore, when Youri realises that his moon is getting further away, he seems to detach from life, convinced that there is no place for him in this world.
Short synopsis: This film portrays the harsh reality of young people living in a social housing complex on the outskirts of Paris, told through both social drama and magical realism.
