Wreath laying by the Trabucaires
On the morning of 24 September, the Trabucaires will head to Plaça de la Mercè before starting their ‘galejada’ (this is when they fire their blunderbusses into the air) at 9.15 am. This will be a time dedicated to the laying of wreaths and acts of protocol that will take place in the La Mercè Basilica. As tradition dictates, the Trabucaires will lay a wreath at the feet of the city’s patron, showing their devotion and respect.
This will be a discreet, intimate act, in contrast with the noisy festival that’ll begin in La Rambla and in Plaça Sant Jaume an hour later. The ‘galejada’ is a loud, high energy event, whereas this time in the Plaça de la Mercè is a demonstration of the solemnity and serenity of the tradition. It’s a gesture that marks the beginning of a day brimming with celebration and tradition, a reminder of the city’s rich heritage; a heritage that has been maintained over time, year on year. With every shot, every step and every tribute, the Trabucaire groups add their contribution to the magic and festive spirit of this special day.
