TINTIN AND HERGÉ: FROM ADVENTURE TO A BENT FOR THE FANTASTIC
Yes, we know: the iconic Adventures of Tintin comic series by Belgian artist Hergé isn’t a work of the fantastic, strictly speaking. But it clearly shares some of the themes of these genres, such as adventure and wonder, and titles such as The Shooting Star and Destination Moon fully embrace the codes of science fiction. National Prize winner César Mallorquí of Barcelona, one of the leading Spanish-language children’s/YA science fiction and fantasy authors; Joan Manuel Soldevilla of Figueres, expert in comics and recent author of Tintín era català [Tintin was Catalan]; and professional Tintinist Enric Reverté, honorary consul of Syldavia and head of the Cantonet Racó Tintinaire [Tintin Corner] for three decades, will come together in this roundtable discussion to celebrate the character and his adventures from the perspective of non-realist literature, but also to recount his greatest adventures with the goal of showing that Hergé unwittingly created legions of fans of speculation, intrigue and the sense of wonder. They’ll be guided by fellow expert Sergi Viciana, the 42 Festival’s very own Professor Calculus for these battles.
