FROM THE EKUMEN TO EARTHSEA: WHY WE LOVE URSULA K. LE GUIN
It was only right, for so many reasons, that this event be included in the programme: because of the author herself, because of her well-deserved canonisation, because of her powerful, infinitely profound genre classics... Not to mention the quality of the Catalan editions that keep her in the limelight around here. For all of the above, this 2024 edition of the 42 Festival has had the pleasure of devoting much of its Sunday morning to LeGuinCon, a small-format convention celebrating the brilliant author of Earthsea, The Dispossessed and The Left Hand of Darkness. The first session will feature three Le Guin experts and diehard fans: her Raig Verd publisher Laura Huerga, the woman behind a successful, determined push for the best possible Catalan-language Le Guin; Venezuelan playwright Loredana Volpe, the longtime leader of the Le Guin book club at the La Insòlita bookshop in Barcelona; and writer and Le Guin champion Inés Macpherson, who always cites her as a go-to author. Together, as they answer the questions posed by fellow author and science fiction researcher Cristina Xifra, they’ll share their passion for Le Guin with the audience, celebrating her with other enthusiasts and seeking to spread the gospel to those who aren’t yet familiar with her works or have been too intimidated to give them a try.
