THE FANTASY BOOM: WHY DON’T YOUNG PEOPLE LIKE REALITY?
Young reader genre literature has traditionally had to grapple with a twofold prejudice: the prejudice against non-realistic literature and the one that proclaims that fiction for young readers is minor literature. Yet, in recent years, we have witnessed a boom in what is called fantasy, and many of its authors have earned international renown, winning awards like the Hugo, Locus or Nebula for their creations. The genre fiction expert Sofía Guerrero will conduct a conversation with five international genre authors for young readers: the Australian Jay Kristoff, author of LIFEL1K3; Giovanni Nucci, known for his adaptations of Greek and Latin classics like Las aventuras de Ulises; Shannon Chakraborty and her trilogy Daevabad, which has become an international bestseller; and Maite Carranza with the trilogy Guerra de les bruixes (The War of the Witches), which now also has a prequel. They will discuss the wealth and diversity of young reader genre literature from both the thematic and formal standpoints, and the guests will be asked whether they believe that young people today have a different reality than they did.
