In 1939, the Franco regime established the Instituto Nacional de Colonización (National Resettlement Institute) to carry out a massive task: to transform part of the barren and dry land into irrigated farmland. In addition to the necessary hydraulic infrastructure, this initiative built nearly 300 villages that housed the agricultural labour necessary to make agriculture the economic source of a country that had to survive under autarchy. Alejandro de la Sota designed Gimenells.
