Management of maritime-related facilities

Maritimity

The entire coastline

Precontent

Along Barcelona’s coastline there are a number of large facilities that function on a city or metropolitan scale. Of these facilities, 78% are located on the west side of the Olympic Port and 22% on the east side. On the basis of the thesis regarding maritimity assumed by the Coastal Plan, an analysis has been carried out to determine which of the existing facilities fulfil or could fulfil a more important function in terms of contributing maritime heritage to the city.

The selection criteria adopted are as follows:

  • Architectural heritage of the maritime façade.
  • Ability to support social, cultural and economic constructions of the city’s relationship with the sea.
  • Preservation of collective memory and maritime heritage.
  • Present and future possibilities.
  • Other facilities with an unequivocally maritime economic, institutional and symbolic dimension.
  • Support for new civic manifestations of maritime citizenship: use of public space on the seafront and the stretch of water; spaces for trades and community projects; cultural actions, perception and development of maritime identities, etc.

Drawing on these ideas, a series of facilities have been identified as opportunities for the promotion of maritimity: cultural, leisure and conference facilities; educational and welfare facilities; sports facilities; and other facilities.

The actions planned are as follows:

  • Mobilising actions that make it possible to harness the strategic potential of the facilities that carry out activities directly
    linked to the sea.
  • Introduction of new uses or activities linked to maritimity in buildings on the coast that form part of the architectural heritage.
  • Study the alternative maritimity uses that can be made of the facilities currently in disuse or underused on the
coastline, and to manage their implementation.
  • Further integrate neighbourhood facilities with the city’s nautical and maritime activities.
  • Detect citizens’ demands for activities linked to the sea that cannot be adequately met with
the current provision of facilities, and provide an adequate response.

What are we doing?

  • We are working to highlight, promote and create synergies with over 20 key coastal facilities, including:

    • Cultural and leisure facilities: identifying joint projects and future synergies with the MMB and, in the port area, following up on the Liceu Mar projects and the fish market improvement project, with an educational space to raise awareness of fishing in Barcelona.
    • Educational facilities: agreement for the permanent establishment of the Barcelona Nautical Institute (INB) and for the renovation of the El Far building, the construction of a new shipyard and the renovation of the Varador building (Action Programme 2022-2026) and the new Barcelona Logistics Institute. Collaboration on other projects with the Faculty of Nautical Studies (UPC), the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM/CSIC) and the Stella Maris Barcelona association.
    • Sports facilities: stabilisation of the headquarters of the Barcelona Capital Nàutica Foundation, preliminary design and concession application for the Instalació Nàutica Menor in Mar Bella, renovation of the Municipal Sailing Centre in the Olympic Port, and work on the facilities in the southern part of the Port Fòrum: The Catalan Federation of Underwater Activities (FEDCAS), the Catalan Sailing Federation (FCV) and the Barcelona International Sailing Center (BISC).
  • Updating of the map of coastal facilities in Barcelona from 2023.
