Renowned conductor, performer, and musicologist Jordi Savall will perform in Barcelona for Mediterranean Day 2024 with a concert titled “Music for Life and Dignity. A Tribute to the Mediterranean.” As an EU Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue, Savall will be joined by Orpheus 21, a musical group he founded in 2016, consisting of migrant and refugee musicians from various countries.
As in the two previous editions, the concert is organized by the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed), the Union for the Mediterranean, the Barcelona City Council, the Government of Catalonia, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union, and Cooperation.
The concert will take place on Saturday, November 30, at 7:30 pm at the Saló del Tinell (Plaça del Rei, 1, Barcelona).
Orpheus 21 will include Hakan Güngör (kanun), Rusan Filiztek (vocals and saz), Wassim Halal (percussion), and Waed Bouhassoun (program concept, vocals, and oud), with Jordi Savall (rebec and vielle) presenting and directing. They will perform over twenty musical pieces, including traditional songs, dances, and chants from the Mediterranean’s historical musical tradition.
To conclude the event, the Syrian duo Athrodeel, comprised of Ahmad Dyab and Aseel Massoud, will give a brief performance.
Renowned artist Frederic Amat created the original painting used as the poster for Mediterranean Day.
Mediterranean Day
This event was officially declared in 2020 by the 43 countries of the Euro-Mediterranean region that make up the Union for the Mediterranean, an international organization headquartered in Barcelona, to celebrate the Mediterranean’s shared heritage and promote dialogue among the region’s cultures and peoples. A first concert was held in Barcelona in 2022 to celebrate Mediterranean Day, and this year, it continues as a call for peace and dialogue.
