Cycling/cyclable network
All the streets, bike lanes and other places in the city designed for cycling. It includes bike lanes, 30 kph streets, kerbless streets (with no raised pavements), traffic-calmed thoroughfares, parks, etc.
Bicycle traffic on city roads must use the roadways, bike lanes and specially adapted areas. The latter are understood to be those stipulated by the regulations as being for bicycle traffic, those where road signs and markings allow it and those expressly authorised for that purpose.
The amendments to the Byelaw on Pedestrian and Vehicle Traffic approved in November 2024 seek to protect pedestrians' use of pavements by forbidding their use by both bicycles and personal mobility vehicles (PMVs). This does not apply to children under 12 or to their accompanying adults, who are therefore permitted to cycle on the pavement, and children under 14 years can similarly ride their bicycles on streets without a cycle lane.
Adults carrying children can also ride on the pavement on streets without a cycle lane. Children may only be carried by people over the age of 18, and only in a trailer or child seat officially approved for the child's weight.
Adding together all the routes, streets and bike lanes that are suitable for cycling shows Barcelona already has nearly 2,000 kilometres of cycling routes and 263 kilometres of bike lanes, available for city residents.
