GREEN SCIENCE FICTION AND SOCIAL CHANGE: WHAT IS SOLARPUNK?
Solarpunk is a speculative subgenre that takes cultural elements from mass society and uses them to resolve various social problems. In other words, it aims to reverse consumerism in favour of a green world and foster optimistic visions of the future, where humanity has solved today’s major problems, such as global warming, pollution and social inequality. All in all, this subgenre covers a wide variety of arts and genres, including literature, art, architecture, music and video games. So, is solarpunk the new utopia, or is it an optimistic, but realist vision of our society? Does it have anything to do with hopepunk or greenpunk? Professors Maria Antònia Martí-Escayol and Raul Ciannella, experts in literature and environmental humanities, will explain, for both knowledgeable and neophyte audiences, the imagery of solarpunk, its heterogeneousness and genealogy, along with the ideologies and interests that lie behind it.
