A new Montjuïc: the transformation to drive Barcelona

The Barcelona of 2035 is to be built from Montjuïc, which will be better connected to the city and its people. The mountain will be at the heart of a transformation that includes the surrounding neighbourhoods, with more housing, public transport and sports and cultural facilities. The arrival of the metro system in Montjuïc, a people-friendly Plaça Espanya, a revamped Olympic complex and the renovation of the trade fair site all form part of a new Montjuïc. The Mayor, Jaume Collboni, outlined the project in the annual conference “The Mayor Responds”.

The definitive transformation of Montjuïc will be carried out over the next ten years and the surrounding neighbourhoods will make it a reality.

New pedestrian corridor in Plaça Espanya

Plaça Espanya will be a friendlier and more accessible space, with all sides connecting with the centre through new pedestrian crossings. Greenery will also be added and the square will be fully integrated into the public transport system with a large transport interchange.

Revamped trade fair site and the new Poble-sec

The renovation of the Fira de Barcelona site will culminate with the centenary celebrations for the Universal Expo of 1929. New pavilions and a new congress hall are to be built, while Av. Reina Maria Cristina will be transformed into a grand pedestrian avenue, the MNAC enlarged and the Palau d’Esports regained. Between Av. Paral·lel and C/ Rius i Taulet, a neighbourhood of 500 publicly owned homes will be created, the new Poble-sec, along with a municipal sports hall and a new primary healthcare centre.

Modernisation of the Olympic complex

Barcelona will become further consolidated as a city for concerts and events thanks to a revamp of the Palau Sant Jordi and the Estadi Olímpic. The esplanade at the stadium will be remodelled and turned into a new public space with more trees, meeting spaces and eateries.

Sustainable mobility at El Morrot

The improvement to mobility at El Morrot will connect neighbourhoods, reorganise logistics spaces and regain green spaces for public use. A new slip road will be created for public transport and bicycles here, connecting Les Drassanes with the port and La Marina del Prat Vermell.

Metro to reach Montjuïc

The L2 metro line is to get six new stations. The network will cross the mountain to connect Sant Antoni and Paral·lel with Montjuïc, the neighbourhood of La Marina, the administrative district and Fira de Barcelona. Once the network reaches the Parc Logístic users can then connect to the L9 to as far as the airport.

A new neighbourhood in La Marina del Prat Vermell

La Marina del Prat Vermell is a growth neighbourhood where there are plans to build up to twelve thousand homes, half of them with official protection. The neighbourhoods surrounding Montjuïc will be boosted with the transformation of Pg. Zona Franca, a new park and facilities at Tres Xemeneies, the renewal of the streets in Turó de la Font de la Guatlla, investment through the Neighbourhood Plan and cultural facilities in Av. Paral·lel.
