Just like every year, in order to maintain the charitable aspect of La Mercè Race, an institution has been chosen to receive the proceeds from the registration fees. This time they will go entirely to the Fundació Catalana d'ELA Miquel Valls.
What is ALS?
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the cells in charge of transmitting voluntary movement orders from the brain to the muscles. The disease is currently being researched, but its cause is unknown and it has no cure, although it does have a treatment to reduce and palliate its effects.
Founded in 2005 in Calella, the Miquel Valls Catalan ALS Foundation is the only non-profit organisation in Catalonia that is working to improve the quality of life of people affected by ALS and other motor neuron diseases. It also offers support and guidance for families and promotes research into ALS.
