Cursa de la Mercè 2024, one of the most iconic sporting events in Barcelona, is firmly committed to sustainability in its 45th edition. In a clear effort to reduce environmental impact, a series of innovative measures have been announced that promote sustainable mobility, responsible waste management, and the use of recycled materials.
One of the most notable initiatives, as in previous editions, is the agreement with Rodalies de Catalunya, which will allow registered participants to obtain a free one-way and return ticket for September 29. Participants will be able to use a special voucher to access Rodalies stations, making travel easier, safer, and more environmentally friendly. This measure encourages the use of public transportation and helps reduce the carbon emissions associated with the mass travel of runners.
The organizers of Cursa de la Mercè have also implemented a refreshment system designed to minimize environmental impact. The refreshment stations, essential for the hydration and recovery of participants, have been adapted to reduce plastic usage as much as possible. Additionally, selective waste collection will be available throughout the event, with a special emphasis on recycling. These efforts reflect a firm commitment to responsible resource management and environmental preservation.
Moreover, the race’s merchandising is aligned with this sustainable vision. The traditional t-shirts given to participants will no longer come packaged in plastic, and this year, they are made from recycled polyester. This decision reinforces the event's commitment to reducing single-use plastics and promoting more conscious consumption.
Another important aspect of Cursa de la Mercè's sustainability efforts is the reuse of the white timing chips. Participants are encouraged to return the chips after the race, allowing for their reuse in future competitions.
Through these actions, Cursa de la Mercè 2024 not only establishes itself as a major sporting event but also as an example of environmental commitment, promoting a more responsible and sustainable culture among all its participants and attendees.
