Montserrat Iranzo and Domingo and the women and men of the community artistic group of the Antic Teatre.
The Antic Teatre is committed to a model of social and cultural center where rooting in the territorial community plays a fundamental and structuring role. From a social point of view, the casuistry of our neighborhood is the authentic diversity, both cultural and personal contexts and inequalities, at the same time as overwhelming tourist oppression. In recent years, the problem has worsened due to what is known as "gentrification": the process of physical, economic and social restructuring of a lower-class neighborhood that ends up becoming a luxury area. As is known, gentrification is associated with housing inflation, real estate speculation and, as a consequence, the eviction of the inhabitants. To combat this, and with the aim of the people of the neighborhood having an active participation in the cultural and artistic life of the city, the Antic Teatre has been developing a community artistic project with neighbors from the neighborhood of Sant Pere, Santa Catarina and La Ribera since 2011.
The Antic Teatre is, and must be, their home. And this is precisely what this social and cultural center means when it talks about "art and politics": that the neighbors perform HERE as part of the regular programming. Why, we ask: after eight years of creative practice, are these people professionals or amateurs? Above all, it is clear that it needs to be dignified and freed from the disrepute and paternalism with which it is often discussed.
