'Dance · Music · Resistance: The Caribbean'
Registrations: espaiavinyo@bcn.cat
In this new session of the Dance · Music · Resistance series, we’ll delve into the musical richness of the Caribbean and explore genres such as reggae, salsa, calypso, and merengue. These rhythms are the result of the fusion of African, European, Indigenous, and Asian influences. We’ll reflect on how globalisation and the commercialisation of these genres have led to cultural appropriation, which frequently overlooks their roots and original creators.
We’ll also analyse the approaches to music that, often laden with stereotypes, simplify Caribbean culture by portraying it as merely festive and superficial. Through discussions and practical activities, we will aim to break away from these stereotypes and promote a deeper and more nuanced understanding of Caribbean music, recognising its complexity and historical and social context.
