Wonderland

In 2006, Cai Guo Qiang, one of the best-known contemporary Chinese artists, caused enormous impact with his installation Head On, which depicts 99 full-scale wolves leaping majestically, only to crash, one after another, into a glass wall. Andrea Miller, a choreographer who was made a Guggenheim Fellow this year, 2014, by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, makes his debut in Barcelona with this artistic metaphor for the pack mentality that inspires Wonderland. The company was founded in 2007 by the choreographer Andrea Miller, named a 2014 Guggenheim Fellow by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Gallim Dance, famed for creating highly kinetic shows that also explore the self and the search for identity, sets this latest production in a landscape that calls to mind the USA in the atomic age. Using images that suggest war, sport, communication and entertainment, Wonderland investigates inherent and potentially dangerous element of human instinct. For, behind the smiles of an Esther Williams dream world (or are they the sinister grimaces of madness?) there may lurk brutal, insensitive behaviour when uniformity becomes the norm and the pack imposes its law. This is, then, a choreography that is both rich in meaning and highly demanding, requiring the performers to reach extraordinary technical heights.
