T. KINGFISHER: MAGIC, COOKIES, FEMINISM... AND A LLIBRETER AWARD
Last June, when the Llibreter Award for children’s/YA works in other literatures went to A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking, there were two immediate reactions: one from the uninitiated, who were surprised that a work with such a quirky title would be celebrated for its quality, and one from the very-much initiated, who applauded the decision with a satisfied “finally!” And rightfully so, because T. Kingfisher, whose real name is Ursula Vernon, is a magnificent fantastic genre author who has won countless awards, including a Hugo, a Nebula and a Locus. Any reader of A Wizard’s Guide..., Nettle & Bones or Minor Mage knows that her fresh spin on wizards, elves, dwarves and other fairy-tale creatures is synonymous with intelligence, humour and a critical spirit. Her conversation with Júlia Baena, a librarian and expert in children’s and YA literature –and also coinciding with the Catalan-language release of Illuminations, published by Indòmita–, will be an opportunity to hear from another one of the most prominent guests at this year’s 42 Festival. Magic, power and fun guaranteed.
