FORBIDDEN LOVE, VAMPIRES AND SONGS: BEYOND YA
All four are renowned Catalan-language authors, all four have written for both adults and young people, and all four are coming to 42 Festival with new works hot off the press, ready to make the argument that thanks to fantastic genres, children’s and YA literature (provided it’s good) can and should be read at any age. The first guest is veteran award-winning author David Cirici, who just published Estimat avatar [Dear Avatar], a dystopian novel where partners are chosen through software, which leads to the emergence of dissidents. Also in the realm of romance, author and journalist Selena Soro returns to Terra Fosca itself, where love was forbidden in Misteris de la boira [Mysteries of Fog], with the rebels Gala and Ciaran closing out the two-part series in L’últim corb [The Last Raven]. Another sequel is La lliga de la llum. Ciutat de vampirs 2 [The League of Light. City of Vampires 2], which takes place in a Barcelona full of exorcisms and featuring the author’s trademark humour and sense of mystery. Meanwhile, writer and playwright Marc Artigau’s Ben al fons del mar [Deep Under the Sea] unfolds far from the urban world, in an underwater setting where Pinocchio and Moby Dick come upon a song with a hidden environmental message, thus connecting with one of the Festival’s other themes: water. Moderated by fellow author and bookseller Isabel del Río, intimately familiar with literature for both young people and adults, all four will make it clear that when it comes to literary creation and reading (and attending the 42 Festival!), age is really just a number.
