BEYOND 'HILL HOUSE': THE “LOCUS HORRIDUS” IN SHIRLEY JACKSON’S OEUVRE
Roundtable
For the second year in a row, led by author Gemma Solsona, the 42 Festival is devoting the Friday morning timeslots to its very own ShirleyCon: a small-format convention to analyse, discuss and share our passion for the work, relevance and legacy of author Shirley Jackson. In this first session, our guests will consider spaces in Jackson’s narrative, from her well-known fondness for houses, which feature prominently in The Haunting of Hill House and We Have Always Lived in the Castle, to her approach to spaces such as the university campus in Hangsaman, the forest in stories such as The Man in the Woods, and mazes and gardens in The Sundial. Guests will include Martí Sales, who recently translated The Lottery and Other Stories into Catalan; professor and expert in the fantastic David Roas, who together with moderator Gemma Solsona participated in the Jackson tribute anthology Todavía vivimos en el castillo [We Still Live in the Castle]; and the author of Arquitecturas inquietantes [Unsettling Architecture], Dr Rosa M. Díez Cobo.
