THE AVENGERS ACCORDING TO ANDREU MARTÍN: THE FANTASY SIDE OF A CULT SERIES
The Avengers was first broadcast in 1961. It was a TV series centred around two British spies, John Steed (Patrick Macnee) and Emma Peel (Diana Rigg), who were faced with cases and investigations every week, at the height of the Cold War. The series soon turned into a parody of the espionage and secret-agent genre, incorporating humour into every episode. And although the series began with espionage plots, the episodes gradually became more and more surrealist. So much so, that they eventually included elements of science fiction, such as armies of robots. It was broadcast for nearly 10 years, reaching over 90 countries, and the programme has always fascinated that master of crime novels (and secret fan of fantasy genres) Andreu Martín, who recommends that we bring back and showcase this cult series, in a workshop where he will explain which episodes contain the most fantastical plots, while sharing some excerpts with us.
