IN TRANSITION - CITY is a conference organised as part of the Cohabitar entre- programme at the Centre d’Art Fabra i Coats with the objective of considering and debating about the city as dynamic spaces undergoing constant transition, tension and movement; and at the same time, as spaces where collective creativity, which affects urban transformation as a project, comes together. For three days of lectures, discussions, working tables, case studies, a city tour, and the screening of a documentary, there will be a strong emphasis upon artistic practices and collective processes as triggers for strategies of unforeseen innovation, affecting both the cultural ecosystem and the social contexts in which they operate.

The city , the urban environment, and its most complex, most tense, most dynamic, most (re) appropriated, most collaborative, most creative, most political configuration, that is to say “public space”, is what is brought together here as space in transition; understanding the city as an art work, as a place for enjoyment, as an object of value, and, above all, as a collective creation, the result of decisions taken and acted upon by citizens.

The tense and contradictory nature of public space calls for the involvement of affected citizens in reformulating, re-appropriating, reconstructing and recreating public space. For this to occur, either formally or informally, personal and collective involvement will be required, allowing the transformation of the city as a space of possibility to be deployed to its fullest potential

In (public) space in transition, conflict and power relations, imbalances and social contradictions, the encounter with the other and isolation, leisure and speculation, beauty and desolation, opportunities and crises, all converge. It is the space of difference, the space of relationships and the space of emergencies which turn the city into a place permanently on the boil, a place of construction and creative destruction.

The transition-city creates a dialogue among scenarios which contribute to the transformation of cities based upon various perspectives and positions, examples of contemporary transition taking place in the modes of production, and examples of the active citizen participation in shaping public space and the contemporary construction of cities.

En transición - ciudad is part of Fabra i Coats Centre d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona's Cohabitar entre- , supported by Idensitat, LaFundició, Sinapsis y Transductores-, and by the project ARTIZEN, European Initiative for Art and Citizen, which includes Dédale, Artart, Expeditio, ProstoRož, Transforma, Idensitat, WAAG Society, and Sinapolis as participants.
