The Ciutat Vella district corresponds to a large extent to the original Barcelona, the city that had been hemmed in between medieval walls and watched over by the imposing Ciutadella fortress until the middle of the 19th century. The Barri Gòtic, or Gothic Quarter, is the historical centre of the Catalan capital. A city that spread as far as the Rambla, the sea and today's Plaça de Catalunya. To the east, where it meets the Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera neighbourhood, and to the west, where it meets Raval, the area reclaimed by the city when the 14th-century wall was built. Barceloneta, a seafaring neighbourhood created in the 18th century on land reclaimed from the sea, is a case apart.
