Celebrating the arrival of Chinese New Year: Year of the Tiger
The Chinese community will be combining with the whole city on 29 January to celebrate the arrival of the New Year. According to the traditional Chinese calendar, the first day of February is the start of the year 4720, the Year of the Tiger.
Chinese New Year is the most important festivity on the traditional Chinese lunar calendar and is celebrated all around the world. This is special moment for Barcelona’s Chinese community, offering a few days for sharing their culture with the rest of the city.
This year’s celebrations for Chinese New Year are being held in person again, with a festive event at Arc de Triomf on Saturday, 29 January (from 12 noon). Organised by Chinese and Catalan entities, the occasion offers traditional Chinese culture, Chinese gastronomy and workshops, rounding off with the traditional Dragon Dance. Check out the programme.
The celebrations for the Year of the Tiger will be complemented with activities online and in other parts of the city from 28 January to 15 February.
The tiger in the Chinese horoscope
From 1 February this year to 23 January 2023 we’ll be under the influence of the Water Tiger, which has a strong sense of self-esteem and a huge learning capacity.
Since ancient times in China, the tiger has been regarded as having the power to drive away evil and prevent calamities, but as it is an extremely quick animal, very often it doesn’t reflect and gets itself into some tight spots.
