L'arribada d'artistes europeus a Nova York el 1940, fugint de la guerra, la va convertir en centre mundial de l'art i va impulsar l'Expressionisme Abstracte Americà (1940-1970). Nova York va liderar l'avantguarda, promovent la llibertat creativa i l'expressió emocional a través de formes planes i obres concebudes com a talismans. Gorky, De Kooning, Hoffman, Rothko, Dalí, Pollock, Still i Louis van ser figures clau. Aquesta exposició rendeix homenatge a partir d’una convocatòria oberta.
