Lluny de l’estètica preciosista de propostes d’animació japonesa més habituals, l’obra de Yamamoto ens mostra el gust per l’experimentació, així com una forta influència de moviments contraculturals d’aquells anys, especialment vinculats a la ideologia hippy i la seva fascinació per espiritualitats allunyades (o rebutjades) per la religió imperant, així com la defensa d’una sexualitat més lliure.
