La Revolució Francesa és la fita històrica que canviarà la percepció del poder, la sobirania i la política per sempre, situant-se com a escenari central d'un període on conceptes com modernitat, ciutadania i progrés veuran la seva realització en la història. Davant convulsions com les revolucions burgeses, les invasions napoleòniques o les guerres d'independència, l'art també experimentarà diverses transformacions: de la cort reial als salons, del barroc al Romanticisme, del neoclàssic al realisme social… Entendre un període tan important com aquest és fonamental per entendre el món en què vivim avui.
