La plaça de Sant Jaume batega al ritme de la ciutat. A més d´acollir els dos edificis institucionals, és un important punt de trobada ciutadà on es fan demostracions castelleres, concerts durant les Festes de la Mercè o de Santa Eulàlia, el pessebre de Nadal i moltes manifestacions i concentracions reivindicatives. També és habitual trobar-hi nuvis que surten de l´edifici de l´Ajuntament, on s´acaben de casar. Sortint de la plaça, es troben a un pas la catedral, la Rambla, la Boqueria o el Born, per esmentar quatre espais emblemàtics.
