Aquesta faula esdevé una de les obres mestres de la lírica del Romanticisme on Dvorák, amb clara influència wagneriana i bevent de la mitologia eslava, explica les aventures d’una nimfa, o esperit de l’aigua, i de l’alt preu que ha de pagar per convertir-se en humana perquè s’ha enamorat d’un príncep.
