How to get there

Department of Culture of the Generalitat of Catalonia. The centre is located in the convent of Santa Monica.
The arts centre is located on the Rambla de Santa Mònica, n. 7, in a partially new building that takes advantage of the old convent of Santa Mònica of the Discalced Augustinians. Built in 1636, Santa Mònica is one of the convents that were created on the Rambla as a result of the Tridentine reform which started in the mid 16th century. These convents contributed to the urban revitalisation project. Other notable convents included the convent of the Jesuits (1553), of which only the church of Bethlehem remains; that of the Discalced Carmelites or Sant Josep (1593), where the current La Boqueria market is located, as well as the convent of the Capuchins (1717), located in today's Plaça Reial. Of all these, the convent of the Discalced Augustinians or Santa Mònica is the only one that is still preserved today after the exclaustration of 1835.

The convent building, with very austere classical lines and scant ornamentation, features a cloister at its centre which is its most notable element. The church, located in the north wing, is a modern construction that replaces the previous one, which was destroyed in 1936. It was declared a national historical and artistic monument in 1984.
Today, the most prominent and characteristic element of the building is the access through the external ramp, which allows for a privileged view of the Rambla and acts as a large open balcony that connects the inside with the outside. During this new stage, the building has undergone a new renovation by the architects Piñón and Viaplana.
