Architects' Association of Catalonia - COAC
The Architects' Association of Catalonia (COAC) is an institution that dates back more than ninety years, during which it has become a prestigious point of reference both at home and abroad. The mission of the COAC is to uphold the social value of architecture and urban planning in the eyes of society and on behalf of architects. In order to achieve this, one of its main attributions is to raise awareness about architecture, both socially and culturally.
In 2021, the COAC promoted the Open Centre for Architecture with the aim of giving more exposure to cultural aspects that the association has been promoting for so many years.
In Barcelona, the project for the building of the Architects' Association of Catalonia was based on a contest held in 1958. The building consists of two parts: a low trapezoidal body (containing the exhibition space and the assembly hall) and an eight-storey high tower.
The latest work on the building took place with the intention of turning it into the Open Centre for Architecture of Barcelona. The new project, taking advantage of its privileged location, creates a central agora connected to the outdoor public space and physically and visually communicates a series of existing common spaces. These common spaces include the access to the building, a mezzanine floor (for exhibitions), the meeting room, the Picasso Space (which is made more flexible and offers compartmentalisation options), the second floor and the terrace, which has created the change in the volume of the building. Consequently, the second floor houses a new indoor-outdoor viewpoint over Plaça Nova. The expectation is that several cultural events open to the public can be held in the future, which underscores the goal to turn the building into a meeting point.
