Margaret Crawford, one of the great international specialists on urban planning in the United States

Despite frequent criticism of the American suburban model, the flow of citizens moving to the suburbs continues unabated: more than half of Americans today live outside urban centres. Recent economic, social and spatial changes are forcing us to reconsider some of the most common assumptions about the suburbs. In fact, their multiple facets and diversity call these generalisations into question: suburbs can be big or small, rich or poor, dense or scattered. This is precisely why they have been so misunderstood.
