Olivia Laing and Juan Gómez Bárcena
In this dialogue, moderated by the journalist Núria Juanico, Olivia Laing and Juan Gómez Bárcena will discuss the books The Lonely City (Canongate, 2016), The Garden Against Time (Picador, 2024) and Mapa de soledades (Seix Barral, 2024). Three works that map out loneliness, both in the contemporary world and throughout history, while reflecting on the garden as a real and metaphorical paradise.
Olivia Laing is a writer and critic. She is the author of To the River: A Journey Beneath the Surface (Canongate Books, 2011), The Trip to Echo Spring (Canongate, 2013), The Lonely City (Canongate, 2016), Crudo (Picador, 2018, James Tait Black Memorial Prize) and Everybody (Picador, 2021). Her most recent books include The Lonely City (Canongate, 2016) and The Garden Against Time (Picador, 2024).
Juan Gómez Bárcena is a writer and critic. He is the author of short-story collections such as Los que duermen (Sexto Piso, 2012 – Tormenta Award for Best New Author) and novels such as El cielo de Lima (Seix Barral, 2014 – Ojo Crítico Prize for Fiction and Ciudad de Alcalá Prize for Fiction), Kanada (Sexto piso, 2017, Ciudad de Santander Award and Cálamo Otra Mirada Award) and Ni siquiera los muertos (Sexto Piso, 2020). His most recent books include Lo demás es aire (Seix Barral, 2023 – Ciutat de Barcelona Award for Literature) and Mapa de soledades (Seix Barral, 2024).
