Thematic coastal routes: signposting and route programme
A coastline as wide and diverse as Barcelona’s makes it possible to plan a number of themed routes. Barcelona’s coastline is much more than just its beaches, even though these are its main attraction.
The use of beaches as a public space can be extended to the whole of the coastline, and the density that is currently present in certain stretches can be distributed along the entire seafront if it is made known and the possibilities it offers are diversified.
In this sense, a series of themed routes along the coastline, both on land and by sea, are proposed to allow visitors to get to know its diversity, variety, values, historical past and uniqueness. The proposed routes will allow the coastline to be discovered stretch by stretch and little by little, and at the same time provide a global vision as a whole.
The aims of the project are to raise awareness of the diversity, variety, values, historical past and uniqueness of the coastline, as well as to provide insight into what the city’s coastal areas are like and how they have been transformed.
To achieve this, the following initiatives are being considered:
- Define coastal routes in conjunction with the More Sustainable Barcelona programme: land, sea and underwater routes
- Evaluate and tailor the routes according to the target audience.
- Activate a plan to advertise the routes.
- Equip the routes (signposting, information, maps) and emphasise the feasibility of travelling on foot or by low-speed means of transport.
- Establish synergies with the More Sustainable Barcelona and the existing route programmes, such as “How does Barcelona work?”.
WHAT ARE WE DOING?

In 2019, a series of routes and guided tours were organised as complementary activities to the ‘Barcelona, Mediterranean capital’ exhibition. The routes focused on the transformation of the coastline from different perspectives: a view from Montjuïc, the coastline around the Olympic Port and Port Fòrum, the coastline from the sea, and the eastern and western coastlines.
